Local governments are working on their 2015 budgets. If you have thoughts on library funding be sure to contact elected officials.  Your voice may be needed to support your library.

What’s a Winnefox?

You may have noticed that this email comes from Winnefox or may have seen our vans on the roads.  So, just what is a Winnefox?

Winnefox is one of 17 library systems in Wisconsin. We provide services to the 30 public libraries in Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Waushara, & Winnebago Counties. Our services include:

  • Administration of the network that gives all the libraries high-speed internet access and email.
  • Management of the shared catalog & circulation system that gives all library users in the area access to the collections of 29 of our 30 libraries.
  • Operation of the vans that carry materials between libraries
  • Continuing education and training for library directors, staff, and trustees.
  • A printing & graphics service to design and print materials for libraries.

As you see, library systems provide services and support that help your library’s staff to do such a great job. Winnefox can provide these services cooperatively more economically than member libraries could on their own.

Library systems are funded by the state, as part of the Department of Public Instruction budget.

7 Surprises About Libraries

The Pew Research Center’s studies about libraries and where they fit in the lives of their communities and patrons have uncovered some surprising facts about what Americans think of libraries and the way they use them.
• People ages 65 and older are less likely to have visited a library in the past 12 months than those under that age. Younger Americans (those ages 16-29) are just as likely to be library users as those who are older.
• Although 10% of Americans have never used a library, they think libraries are good for their communities.
• E-book reading is rising but just 4% of Americans are “e-book only” readers.
• Those who read both e-books and printed books prefer reading in the different formats under different circumstances.
• Those who use libraries are more likely than others to be book buyers.

What’s your library worth to you?
The library provides a lot of intangible value but did you ever wonder about the financial value you receive from your library?  Winnefox has posted a calculator that estimates what you would have to pay for the materials and services you receive from your library if the library didn’t exist.  If you enter in where you live it also calculates the amount of return you receive from your tax support of the library.  Check it out at www.winnefox.org/roi.html

When it comes to reading to your child, new report says start early

Have you signed up for email library notices?  The library can email you notices when you have something waiting to be picked up, when something will be due soon, and when you have something overdue.  If you sign up you will receive only these email notices and, because your personal information is confidential, the library will not share or give out your email address.  Ask at your library to sign up.

Local governments will soon start drafting their 2015 budgets.  Elected officials need to hear from constituents about the services they feel are important.  Now is the time to talk to them.    Back in 2006 we posted recommendations on communicating with elected officials:  http://blogs.winnefox.org/speakup/2006/10/26/communicating_with_elected_...

Don’t forget to say “Thanks”
Any time you contact elected officials about an issue thank them.  Whether the issue was decided the way you hoped for or not, thank them for their help and support.  Even if they didn’t vote the way you wanted them to, thank them for listening to your concerns.  You may be contacting them in the future on another issue and they’ll remember your thanks.
